NEW YORK (AP) — AstraZeneca Plc is the first US pharmaceutical company to get approval to sell a generic version of Nexium in Europe, a move expected to ease pressure on the drugmaker to increase its sales in the United States.
The German drugmaker has said it will begin selling Nexium, the world’s top-selling drug, in the U. S. over a six-month period ending Dec. 31, at a cost of $4 billion.
Nexium is the world’s second-biggest drug in terms of sales and has been widely praised for its ability to relieve symptoms associated with heart disease.

Lilly shares were up almost 10 per cent on news of the deal, which was completed in March. In Europe, the company reported that the European drugmaker was up more than 20 per cent to $6.8 billion.
