A new study finds a reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes among elderly people. But more research is needed to confirm the link.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Researchers at the study, led by Dr. Steven Nissen, a pediatric endocrinologist, looked at 5 million records of Americans aged 60 and older, and found a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, and coronary artery disease among those who were prescribed an antidepressant.
"The main finding was that, while there was a reduced risk of heart attacks, there was no increased risk of heart attacks or strokes," Nissen said.
The study, called the “Clinically Proven,” was presented at the 2013 American Heart Association meeting. It was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The study compared the use of the two drugs, Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prevacid (proton pump inhibitor), in 3.5 million Americans, and found a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, and coronary artery disease among those who took both drugs.
The researchers also found that the use of Proton Pump Inhibitors increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes among people who were prescribed an anti-inflammatory drug.
Researchers also analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which shows Americans age 60 and older have an increased risk of serious diseases.
The study found the lowest risk of heart attacks among those who were prescribed an anti-inflammatory drug was 25 percent.
The study also found that those who were prescribed the drugs did not have a greater risk of strokes.
The researchers noted that they found that the drugs were more effective at reducing heart attacks and strokes in older people.
The study also found no increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, or coronary artery disease among people who were given an antibiotic.
They said that this suggests that the drugs do not increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes in older people, but rather, may simply increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes among people who are already taking heart drugs.

“While we do not know for sure what the risk of heart disease is in the general population, it is known that the risk is lower among patients with cardiovascular disease.”
The study was sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which has more than 40 years of experience in clinical research.The researchers said that their findings may provide a new basis for identifying risk factors that could be missed in older people.
“It would be helpful to know whether the use of medications like these might not have been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly for those who are already taking these medications,” Dr. Patel said.
